It is a very convenient system. As long as the service is available, you can park anywhere, except indoors, by paying a fee. In fact, in the Jeonju area where I live, it was easy to find a Kakao Bike near my residence.
Kakao Bike has a legal maximum speed of 25 km/h, but for safety reasons, the maximum speed is 20 km/h.
Kakao Bike service area
Kakao Bike service is only available in a few cities, not nationwide.
Existing Seongnam-si, Songpa-gu, Wirye New Town, Hanam-si, Ansan-si, Incheon Metropolitan City Yeonsu-gu, Seo-gu, Namdong-gu, Jeonju-si, and Ulsan Metropolitan City will be expanded to four metropolitan cities: Daegu, Busan, Gwangju, and Daejeon.
In addition to the above areas, Kakao said that it is discussing adding service areas through cooperation with local governments. And if you ask Kakao for the region you want, they say they will promote it quickly.
What is the price of Kakao Bike?
The price of Kakao Bike is approximately 100 won per minute, which is higher than that of regular bicycle rentals.
To use the service for the first time, a deposit of KRW 10,000 is required in advance. The Kakao Bike usage fee is automatically paid by credit card. If the card balance is insufficient or the credit card payment is not accepted, the insufficient amount is deducted from the deposit.
If 7,000 won was paid from the deposit due to insufficient card balance, the next time you use Kakao Bike, you must pay 7,000 won again to make up the 10,000 won deposit.
It is also refundable if you plan not to use it after paying the deposit.
Deposit refund is possible through the path of ‘Run Kakao T App -> Select My Information at the bottom right of the screen -> Deposit -> Cancellation of payment’.
When using Kakao Bike, you can use it for the first 15 minutes at a basic rate of 1,000 won, and 500 won for each subsequent 5 minutes. Also, be aware that if you park after the Kakao Bike service ends outside the service area, a usage fee of KRW 20,000 will be added.
If you park outside of the serviceable area, you do not have to worry too much as the app will notify you of ‘serviceable area’.
In other words, the price of Kakao Bike can be calculated as 100 won per minute.
Payment for Kakao Bike can be made with Kakao Pay, mobile phone micropayment, or PayPal.
How to use Kakao Bike?
Let’s learn how to use Kakao Bike from now on.
① Launch the Kakao Bike app
Run ‘Kakao T App’ to use Kakao Bike. After running, select ‘Bike’.
After entering the bike, the map will show the location of the bike. Check this.
Find the bike closest to your location. What you need to pay attention to here is to check the amount of battery on the bicycle location display. When you select a bike, the battery level is displayed at the top of the screen, preferably a bike with 100%.
The battery capacity of the selected bike came out to the maximum of 3 hours and 20 minutes.
If you plan to use Kakao Bike for only about 30 minutes, you can think that it will be possible with more than 30 minutes of remaining capacity. Avoid low-capacity batteries. If the battery capacity is low, it can be said that the motor force pushing the pedals is also small. If you’re going on flats or uphill, you’ll barely feel the pushing motor force.
Even if you use it for a short time and a short distance, please use a battery with as much capacity as possible.
② Move to the Kakao Bike you want to use
Once you’ve chosen your bike, you’ll find it on the map.
You have found a bike with full battery and the closest location to your current location.
Once you have found your Kakao Bike, check the bike status. Check the exterior condition, whether the chain is broken, whether the tire air pressure is okay, whether the brakes are normal, and whether the transmission is working well.
The part circled in red in the picture below is the part where the electric battery is installed. So please note that the bike is heavy.
You should also check the gear shift. The closer the number is to 1, the stronger the electric motor power. Less pedal effort, but slower speed. On the other hand, the closer you are to 7th, the more pedal effort you can take, but the speed is just as fast.
When I tried it myself, the transmission of 6 to 7 of 10 bikes was worn out and did not work well. However, even with 6-7 gears, it was less difficult because the electric motor pushed it.
③ Deposit charge
Kakao Bike first-time users must first pay a deposit of 10,000 won.
④ Select ‘Use a bike’
If there is no problem after checking the bike, select ‘Use the bike’ in the app.
If you choose to use a bike, you must authenticate with the QR code of the corresponding Kakao Bike.
Just scan the QR code located on the front or rear of the bike.
⑤ Use Kakao Bike after authentication
When authentication is complete, the lock on the rear wheel of the bike will be unlocked. Available later.
⑥ Smart lock lock at the end of use
To shut down Kakao Bike, you must lock the rear tire locking device after parking in a serviceable area. After that, the usage fee is paid and the service is terminated.
Kakao bike regret?
Charges to be borne
Kakao Bike charges 100 won per minute. Compared to regular bicycles, these are more expensive to use. For example, in the case of ‘Tashu’, a public bicycle operated by Daejeon Metropolitan City, the rental fee is 500 won per day. Of course, comparing electric bikes and regular bikes is unreasonable, but it’s true that it’s burdensome. So, it would be better to use it as a means of moving to a destination rather than traveling by bicycle with Kakao Bike.
GPS error
An error may occur in the GPS mounted on the bicycle. For example, when I went to the bike location indicated by the app, there were cases where it was not actually there. I walked a long distance, but I remember feeling empty because I didn’t have a bike.
bike size
Choose your bike size according to your height. However, since the size of the Kakao Bike is the same, tall people may find it uncomfortable. I maxed out the saddle at 185cm, but it was uncomfortable.
What are the precautions for Kakao Bike?
Kakao Bike can be parked anywhere in the service area. This is a big advantage. Dark shaded areas on the app map are places where bike parking is not allowed. Of course, you can use bikes outside the service area, but only parking is not allowed. Parking must be parked in a serviceable area that is inside the shade.
And when you park your bike, make sure you don’t park it at the entrance of a building or in a high-traffic area. Also, do not park indoors or under bridges where GPS reception is not available.
What if an accident occurs while using Kakao Bike?
Accidents may occur while riding a Kakao Bike.
You must first terminate service or emergency termination.
Next, you need to file an accident report through the Kakao Bike Customer Center (1877-3006).
Kakao Bike can be guaranteed by including the insurance fee in the usage fee.
The insurance fee is 130 won per trip (insurance fee 120 won, fee 10 won) included.
